Teaching Philosophy

I believe elementary teaching is the work of building strong foundations while helping
children see themselves as capable learners. In an elementary classroom, reading, writing,
mathematics, science, and social studies are important, but so are the habits that make
learning possible: asking questions, explaining an idea, listening to another person, revising
work, and trying again after a mistake. I want my classroom to be a place where children
know what they are learning, understand why it matters, and feel that their questions and
ideas have a place in the room.
I plan instruction around the developmental needs of elementary students rather than
expecting one method to fit every child or every lesson. I use clear modeling and guided
practice when students are first encountering a skill, then move toward partner work,
independent practice, and application as their confidence grows. In literacy, this may mean
combining explicit instruction in phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension with
read-alouds, discussion, and time to write about meaningful texts. In mathematics, I want
students to explain how they solved a problem, compare strategies, use models or
manipulatives when useful, and connect a procedure to the mathematical idea behind it.
Across subjects, I make room for hands-on work, conversation, movement, and opportunities
to connect new learning to what students already know.
I pay close attention to the difference between being busy and being engaged. Young
students are most invested when they have something real to figure out, make, explain, or
improve. I use questions that require more than a one-word response, invite students to turn
and talk before sharing with the whole class, and use short investigations or collaborative
tasks to give purpose to practice. Choice is also useful within clear boundaries: a student
may choose which book to respond to, which strategy to represent, or which format to use to
demonstrate understanding. These decisions help children develop ownership without
removing the structure they need.
Assessment is part of teaching, not an event that happens after teaching. I use observation,
questioning, student conferences, exit slips, writing samples, running records, and short skill
checks to see what students understand and what is getting in the way. When a student is
struggling with a reading pattern or mathematical concept, I use that information to adjust
the next lesson, regroup students for targeted support, or reteach a skill in a different way. I
also teach children to look at their own work, identify a strength, and name a next step. Over
time, I want students to understand that assessment helps us decide what to do next rather
than simply telling them whether they are good at something.
