GROWTH AREAS & CHALLENGES
A notable challenge I faced this year was adapting to the integration of NoSQL
databases (specifically MongoDB) into our historically relational ecosystem. During the
launch of the new real-time logging service, I attempted to apply strict relational schema
design principles to the document store. This resulted in early performance bottlenecks
and an overly complex application logic layer. I had to step back, acknowledge my
knowledge gap, and rapidly upskill on NoSQL document structures and aggregation
pipelines. This experience taught me the importance of choosing the right tool for the
job and breaking out of my SQL-only comfort zone. Additionally, I occasionally struggled
with delegating routine maintenance tasks to the junior DBAs, choosing to handle
scripts myself to ensure perfection, which hampered their learning opportunities and
kept me from strategic planning.
FUTURE GOALS
To continue delivering highly available and scalable data architectures, I have
established the following objectives for the upcoming year:
Infrastructure as Code (IaC):
Transition our database provisioning and
configuration management entirely to Terraform and Ansible by Q3, eliminating
manual configurations and reducing the risk of human error during deployments.
Advanced Cloud Certification:
Obtain the AWS Certified Database - Specialty
certification by the end of Q2 to deepen my expertise in managing distributed cloud
database topologies and optimizing read/write scaling.
Mentorship & Delegation:
Establish a formalized runbook for routine alerts and
patching, empowering the junior DBA team to handle Tier 1 and Tier 2 database
incidents independently, allowing me to focus on architectural design.
