GROWTH AREAS & CHALLENGES
A notable challenge I faced this year was adjusting to multi-state payroll taxation. When the
company expanded operations and hired remote employees in three new states in Q2, I
underestimated the complexity of local municipal taxes and reciprocal agreements. I relied
heavily on the default HRIS tax setups without manually verifying the local nexus
requirements, resulting in a minor under-withholding issue for two remote employees.
Having to retroactively correct their W-2s was a frustrating experience for them and a
humbling one for me. This taught me a critical lesson: software is only as good as the
user’s regulatory knowledge. I now actively consult state-specific tax agency resources and
our legal counsel before processing payroll in any new jurisdiction to ensure flawless
compliance.
FUTURE GOALS
To continue elevating the payroll function and ensuring complete organizational compliance,
I have established the following goals for the upcoming year:
Professional Certification:
Begin studying for and successfully pass the Certified
Payroll Professional (CPP) exam by the end of Q4 to deepen my expertise in complex
taxation, FLSA compliance, and payroll accounting.
Automate Accrual Reconciliations:
Transition our manual Excel-based PTO accrual
reconciliation process directly into the HRIS reporting suite by Q2, reducing my monthly
processing time by roughly four hours.
Employee Resource Development:
Partner with HR to create a comprehensive
"Payroll FAQ" intranet page by Q3, addressing common questions regarding tax bracket
changes, accessing pay stubs, and reading W-2s, which will proactively reduce the
volume of individual email inquiries I receive each week.
