Training Agenda

An agenda is an ordered list of topics or items to be discussed (as in meeting agenda) or acted upon (as in training agenda). The word agenda is abbreviated from the Latin agenda sunt and agendum est (gerund forms of actum/agere and agi meaning “act, to act or acted”).

A training agenda is, basically, a series or outline of activities or training process a trainer sets for the whole training course or program. This is to evenly distribute the time allocated for each activity in the whole training process, and to be able to easily monitor the performance of the trainees. What to Include in a Training Agenda

An agenda of any kind (e.g. project agenda) is created with the intention of organizing topics to be discussed or tasks to be done. The following are the things you usually include in a training agenda:

  • Basic details including title of training program, location, date and time, name of trainer or facilitator, and expected number of training participants.
  • Training goal and objectives.
  • List or table of activities including estimated time (start time and end time), methods, and resources (speakers, tools, aids, etc).
  • Evaluation or comments. You may want to ask comments on how your training went, and any suggestions on how to improve your training agenda.

Benefits of a Training Agenda

Any kind of agenda (e.g. sales agenda) is created to aid in organizing things. Imagine a training program without a training agenda. You won’t have a proper sequence of activities or a properly allocated time for each activity. In short, you do not have a schedule to follow, leading to confusion and chaos.

Training agendas set the sequence of activities to be followed in a training program. With a well plotted training agenda, you will be able to conduct all the planned activities without compromising one for the other and your training program will be able to follow a smooth flow of activities from beginning to end.

How to Plan a Training Agenda

Constructing a training agenda requires a lot of time and effort. How you plot the activities on your agenda determines the flow of your training program. The flow of your training program will determine the outcome. If you want a positive outcome, you need a well-planned training agenda. And you’ll need to remember a few things before making your training agenda:

  • Perform an assessment to know what your trainees need. What do they need to improve? What do they need to develop?
  • Determine your goals and learning objectives. What do you want to accomplish? How will it benefit the trainees? Highlight key points and topics.
  • Plan your activities and methods. Identify what you need to include on the training based on your goals and learning objectives. Design activities to meet the needs of your trainees.
  • Identify your desired outcome. Know what you want to achieve. This will also help in planning the activities and methods you need to use for the whole training.
  • Organize everything. Create an outline, make a table, and set the time frame for each activity. Also, prepare your training materials. You may also need to calculate the total cost for each materials.

And a bonus tip to determine if your training agenda met the outcome you wanted:

  • Evaluate the whole training. How did it go? Were you able to follow the proper schedule? Were your goals and objectives met? You may ask for opinions from the trainees and see if you can improve your training agenda for your next training.

How to Construct a Training Agenda

After planning your agenda, bring it to life. Here are a few tips and guidelines in constructing a training agenda or any kind of agenda (e.g. work agenda) which, I hope, would help you create one.

  • Keep it short and organized. You need an agenda that can be understood by everyone. Write in a clear and organized way. One effective way to do this is to create an outline, or write everything in a table.
  • Use a template. There are many training agenda templates to guide you in writing a agenda. But you can always customize your own template if you want.
  • Write all the important information. Write everything and do not miss a single thing. Even the smallest details can always make a difference.
  • Seek a second opinion. It is always best to have a personal reader or proofreader among our friends. Our works always need a second eye to spot errors our own eyes cannot see.
  • Review and revise. As always, check for errors of any kind like spelling errors (especially names of people). Check and recheck everything if you must.
