What Is the Purpose of a Mission Statement?

A mission statement must serve as the spearhead of a organization in terms of how to do things, where to do things, and the nature of the service or product to be sold to the market analysis. It must also, most importantly, serve as a guide over the values and principles of the company, either internally or externally.

This is what a mission statement is for:

  • To define the business. The main purpose of the mission statement is to define the business proposal. The mission statement must be able to define what the business offers, how it offers them, and the location to which it offers the service or product.
  • To determine why it exists. In a market that has many competitors constantly trying to tackle each other for more market share, why would you want to join in the endless competition? A mission statement might answer that question.
  • To set the values and philosophies of the venture. Another important aspect is that usually, values and philosophies of the company are present in the statement, and that tells a lot on how the business statements does things. Words like “passionate”, “competitive”, “world-class” are some of the oft-used words in a mission statement. In other words, no different from the competition.
  • Serves as a guide for the business. A mission statement must also serve its purpose of directing the business. A good statement should be able to set all the employees’ eyes on the goal of the company, direct everyone toward the values and principles of the company, and serve as a spearhead on the direction the company wants to go. The mission statement must guide like how a flow chart would.

How to Make a Great Mission Statement

A lot of organizations making mission statements try so hard to be a clever or catchy that it seems like they’re trying to make their slogan as the basis for the mission statement, which is wrong.

Making a phrase that serves as a marketing tool as the basis of a mission statement will not make any sense, since the mission statement must come from the collective efforts and voices of people from the company or organization. Here are tips on making an accurate mission statement:

  • Inquire from people within the organization. Communicate with some people from within the company and let them write their own mission statement for the company and see what they would be able to create. Remember, the employer-employee relationship must be like a partnership agreement. It’s all about working together to achieve great results.
  • Sit and talk about it. After they have wrote their own version of the mission statement, sit down with them and talk about how would you as a group would be able to merge all of the statements written and inculcate the ideas of everyone as a single piece of mission statement that will be used by the company.
  • Test the new statement. Get a sample size from the whole population of the company and try to ask them what they think of the the new mission statement of the company. Maybe there are things that can still be added to the statement to make it better and the suggestions may come from the people you least expect to be able to help with it. A survey will be able to help out with this non profit mission statement.
  • Communicate the new mission statement to the rest of the employees. After the final inquiry and the testing period has been made, it’s now time to communicate the new mission statement to the rest of the work force. It is important for everyone to be able to know the new definition of the company and the vales and philosophies that they should adhere to. A company brochure is a good medium for the dissemination of the new information.

Types of Mission Statements

The mission statement must not only focus on the reason the company exists, and the values and principles that everyone must adhere to. It must also talk to either the clients, customers, or the product to which the company or organization is planning to gain profit from.

There are mainly two kinds of mission statements:

  • Product-oriented statement. A product-oriented mission statement will put more emphasis on the product to be sold rather that how the service will be to the customers. These kinds of statements talk about how great their product is rather than how it may help people.
  • Customer-oriented statement. A type of statement that focuses more on the type of service for the customers rather than the product. This type of management statement is more flexible because it talks about customers who will always be customers, either to you or to someone else, rather than talking about a product that has a life cycle and will probably be replaced one day. This statement is much like a partnership agreement between the company and its customers.

Mission statements are the guides that everyone in an organization or company will have to adhere to. So it makes perfect sense to make one. Consider these statements in formats like statements in pdf, statements in word to help you make a great mission statement.
