This report also holds as a formal complaint being filed by a concerned person about the incident that happened. In addition to that, the report also holds a record of information to use, to analyze firm evidence. Lastly, the information would be used to formulate a conclusion or a solution to the issue.

Importance of an Investigation Report

The importance of an investigation report is to document what happened during the incident. To understand how the incident went and the steps taken to solve the issue. In addition to that, it is the process of clarifying how you view the incident and answer questions about it. Also, it gives off a finding that would show you the bigger picture of how you believe the incident happened. Lastly, it helps you figure out the steps and how to avoid situations like this from happening again.

There are types of materials to be used in an investigation report. Some may be as common and almost always used. Others are also used but not as common enough. Each material serves the same purpose. There are some rules you need to follow when writing one. Regardless of what material or tool you are choosing, may it be in a narrative form or a checklist form.  However, I will only be writing some good tips for you to help you go along with making that report. So check out these tips to remember before writing that report.

  • Begin with the introduction – If you are writing a narrative for your investigation report, you should begin with an introduction. Give your reader an overview of what you are writing about. Do not give out a full specification of the report. Rather, give them a general overview. You are merely giving them time to get ready and to make them understand what your report would be about.
  • Give the scope of your report – Once you have written your introduction, you may begin by writing the summary or the scope of your report. This is where you give out the information that is relevant to and required of the report. This also gives the reader some clues as to what you are trying to prove.
  • Place your sources of information – Where did you find your information? State your sources. The reason for this is to show that the facts lead to your sources. Your sources should be hard facts and evidence. Because if not, this may lead to hearsay and that should be avoided at all costs.
  • State your witnesses- Include in your report, the witnesses, the interviews and the reports that have been written or told. This is also good evidence to back up your report. If possible, write them all down in chronological order.
  • Check everything – As you write everything down, you may want to send it to your immediate supervisor as soon as possible. Before you are able to do so, check if you have given all the information needed. Check your sources if they are valid as well as the people you have interviewed. Always check twice for your evidence if they are good enough to support your claim and report.
