Cube Root Formula
The cube root of a number x is the value that, when multiplied by itself three times, equals x.
Cube Root = ∛x
Unlike square roots, cube roots are defined for negative numbers too, since a negative number multiplied by itself three times stays negative.
Common Cube Roots (Reference Table)
| Number (x) | Cube Root (∛x) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
| 8 | 2 |
| 27 | 3 |
| 64 | 4 |
| 125 | 5 |
| 1000 | 10 |
| 0.5 | 0.793701 |
| 2 | 1.259921 |
| −8 | −2 |
| −27 | −3 |
How to Calculate a Cube Root by Hand
To find the cube root of a perfect cube, identify which whole number multiplied by itself three times gives the original number. For numbers that aren’t perfect cubes, the cube root is found using estimation, a calculator, or the exponent 1/3.
Suppose you want the cube root of 64. Since 4 × 4 × 4 = 64, the cube root of 64 is 4.
Thus, ∛64 = 4.
Solved Examples on Cube Roots
